On the first day after my last day at MSFT, I reimaged all my machines. Windows itself is not bad (SSH, PowerShell, and WSL are fine), but the junk our IT department installs definitely is. So while I was reimaging, I decided it was time for Linux desktops on my three machines.

Bee / Nuc + Omakub

This has worked pretty well. Camera and audio are fine. I had to fight a Bluetooth mouse disconnect, but ChatGPT seemed to figure it out. Chrome, VSCode, Spotify all seem fine. Still using GNOME Terminal over Alacritty some of the time. Omakub certainly has options.

Api servers are always private except for wireguard port
- Use a side car for each api server pod https://tailscale.com/kb/1185/kubernetes#sample-sidecar. Drop a tailnet secret in ccp.
- like api server vnet integration pods show up in your tailnet/overlay even if they have no nodes. Can be hit directly with endpoint slices
- No konnectivity proxy ingress and egress goes direct to api server pods
- Could still have a internal load balancer for legacy nodes but ideally want none of that.
- Rest of ccp does not need to be in tailnet but could be
Head scale lets you join the cluster. (can we use certs to verify this public key is from a baremetal node? We can’t be the ones giving them a secret?)

Since I was “junior” engineer there have been a bunch of stuctual changes

Facebook, Amazon and Google blew out the market for young engineers ESPECIALLY at top schools.
There are more CS grads but if you think school is mostly about signaling that doesn’t mean you get more smart kids.
Seniors went remote in 2020 and most didn’t come back. Mentoring over teams is much more transactional.

Now AI is making all the hiring managers be like wait what am I paying for? And the best young kids can learn from Chatgpt and open source and just do founders. So maybe we’ll see a collapse and then a shartage. Fun for everyone.

PodDisription Conidtions and Eviction Backpressure on replicasets-deployments and stateful sets. Started an issue 128815 to get a condition on for blocked evictions. The former should help k8s-pdb-autoscaler along but the latter should make it not necessary. The idea of back pressure is replicasets controllers would monitor their pods and update their own status if they’re seeing seeing eviction blocked on pod status. Deployment controller could then scale up if its the most recent replicaset or if there is a newere replicaset that can’t make progress scale that down then scalue up the older defacto replicaset to unblock evictions.

But this app is different from one who says maxunavailble : 0 indicating it needs special handling its max surge already shows intention it can be disrupted as long as a new pod is surged in first.

Hurrican ridge is an amazgin drive even if you don’t do the walk/hike to the top (paved hiking path)
Sol duc springs I have never done but seems popular
port angeles has a few nice resteraunts. Lots were closed for pandemic when we were there but this one was nice
there was mediocre wine tasting between there lake cresetn and port angeles
if you have way too much time goto victoria on the ferry
this place was pretty cool if you like tidal ecosystems. And there was surfers
there is a nice bike path to devils punchbowl
this falls hike is a pretty trivial hike I did with the boys while wintana was working on vacation
this year I am going to try and have benji do stormking and maybe drag nate along.
But lastly I would be remis to mention the olympic game farm in sequim. It is so ridiculous brad, kristen, wintana an I literally spent 30 minutes laughing about it at camping

But also I am bringing Kubb and Bocci and wine to our cabin where there are canoe and other rentals so just doing nothing is also an option.

Sage Hot Italian Sausge Pasta

Indgredients

10 oz Hot Italian Port Sausage
1 bunch sage
1 shallot
1/4 cup cream
1/4 cup grated parmesan
6 oz kale
1 tpbsp rice vinegar

Directions

Boild 3/4 pot salted water
pick sage leaves
seperate kale, roughly chop
peel/thinly slice shallot
Fry sage in 2 tsp olive oil. medium high heat. 1-2 min. Leave oil.
Cook sausage 3-4 minutes.
Start pasta. 10-12 minutes reserve 1/2 cup pasta water.
add chopped kale, shallot, 4-5 minutes
Add vinegar and cream. 30secs - 1 minute. turn off heat till pasta ready
combine pasta and half reserved water in pan. Cook medium high 1-2 minutes
Finish with Sage leaves and cheese.

I have opinions about concerts.

Why? I think he numerator is pretty un objectionable. Lets look at the denominator.

Artist Ubiquity is probably the weirdest term. I am using this as a combination of
- saturation: is the music everywhere? have you already heard most of this? are there already multiple live albums
- wealth: long popular artists are generally wealthy. Do you want to feed the hyper wealthy class and give them more power in the industry
- ageism: I think artists like athletes (and the rest of us) have a peek and generally decline. The audience also skus older and is less rowdy.
Some personal examples. Willie Nelson and Hank willams jr are both musicians i love but both have a discography a mile long, have multimillion dollar ranches and are pretty decrepit old dudes at this point. Put AC/DC in here (also bands with a dead member are weird… Syknyrd). George Straight is less extreame example who is still touring. Still kind of old and modeately wealthy but less shoved in your face. Obviously best to catch Lizzo right before she blows up but still fine to go see her at the height of her powers.

Turns out march 2023 was a good time to read a book about how GE was secretly a bank that failed.

Recap of the disaster
- In the 90s, GE used its AAA credit rating to grow a ginormous financial divison that accounted for 50% of its profits. Some parts were related (airplane, power leasing). Some parts were not. (leveraged buyouts, real estate, insurance). It did not have backup lines of credit but used short term loans that could (and did) dry up.
- 2001 made people realize GE had huge liabilities because it insured both planes and the wtc. (I was familiar with this part)
- 2007-8 GE capital did not divest from real estate (despite some internal advice to do so). It went down hard, maybe almost bankrupt. It’s short term financing went away and credit rating went down. It snuck into bailouts by the skin of its teeth by getting declared structurally important.
- 2018, same time Jeff got ousted at CEO, it got a double whammy. A small LTC insurance business it failed to spinoff posted a 20 BILLION loss because its models sucked. The power business crapped itself (part failed merger, part terrible forcast, par bad management).
- GE is now basically a jet engine business and a seperate power business .
Though the book is ambivalent about whether Jeff or Jack set up GE to fail it leans more heavily to jeff. But not sure that’s right. Jeff did try and unwind GE capital but kinda of failed to miss the most important parts (real estate and the LTC). It’s not clear what Jack built was ever sustainable. Success has a thousand fathers and failure is an orphan. Jeff is that orphhan.

Make meat more delicious!

Indgredients

1 shallot
1/4 cup wine, beer, whiskey
3/4 cup stock (chicken or beef)
2 tablesoons of butter

Directions

Cook some meat. Remove and don’t clean the pan. Leave on medium high.
Add a little more oil if pan is dry. Toss in the shallot. 2.5 minutes.
Optionall toss some herbs in with shallot
Deglaze! Toss the alchol in reduce by half. 3 minutes
put in the stock reduce to 1/2 cup about 4 minutes.
Turn down the heat and melt in butter.

1 pkg. active dry yeast
¼ cup warm water (105 degrees)
¾ cup lukewarm milk
¼ cup sugar
1 tsp. salt
1 egg
¼ cup butter or margarine
3½ -3 ¾ cups all-purpose flour
18 large marshmallows
1 Tbsp. cinnamon
1 cup sugar
½ cup butter, melted

Directions

In mixing bowl, dissolve yeast in warm water. Add milk, ¼ cup sugar, the salt, egg, butter and half the flour; mix with spoon until smooth. Add enough remaining flour to handle easily; mix with hand. Turn onto lightly floured board; knead until smooth and elastic, about 5 minutes. Round up in greased bowl; bring greased side up. Cover; let rise in warm place until double, about 2 hours. (The dough will retain a finger impression when touched.) Punch down; divide dough in half. Divide the first half into nine equal pieces. Form each piece into a 3½ flatten circle about ¼ inch thick. Mix cinnamon and sugar. Dip each marshmallow in melted butter and then in cinnamon-sugar mixture. Wrap a dough circle around the coated marshmallow, pinching tightly at the bottom to seal. Dip roll in butter and then in cinnamon -sugar mixture. Place in greased medium muffin tin, pinched side down. Repeat with remaining dough. Let rise 30 minutes.
Heat oven to 375. Bake 25 to 30 minutes. Cover with foil for last 10 minutes if baking. Hint: Place a sheet of foil under muffin tin to catch any melted marshmallow that escapes.

Way back in the ancient times of 2006 I had a boss who wrote a xml sax parser in C++ because libraries were hard i guess. I got to debug bugs and use it and evntually wrote a object representation on top of it which used more memory and was 10% less awful to use. But everything was terrible so xml probably just didn’t have good libraries right.

Today I had to edit someone’s app.config and append to xml attributes that were really maps[string][]string / Dictionary<string,List> that were hand serialized as"foo:bar,bunk;moo:brown,cow"

Beer pickles. From some beer cookbook I got for christmas.

12 oz session ipa.
1 cup apple cide vinegar
1/4 cup sugar
2 table spoons salt.
1 tablespoon black peppercorns
2 teaspons red chili pepppers.
1 lb of cucumbers. Cutto chips or spears. Persian cocktails so far.
4-5 “sprigs of dill”

Throw everythign but the cucumber and dill into pan. Simmer at boil for 3 minutes. Cool. Dump in air tight container filled with cucumbers and dill. Leave 24 hours in fridge.

Why Skiing

Today was Benji’s first ski lesson. He did great. Between lessons, rentals, two season passes it was a pretty expensive 2 hours of leisure. I have (or will have) other posts on the value of cheapness, and I’m pretty frugal with my other hobbies. So let me rationalize why I care about Skiing.

Outdoors are special. You will see views that will change you won’t see otherwise.
Seattle winters can be brutal. Snow is better than rain and you can maximimze the few hours of sunlight you get.
Skiing get exponentially more fun the better you get. Square miles open up and you can cover more territory in a day then you could in a month hiking. Going from groomers to trees is special type of magic.
Pretty decent workout.
Forced conversation with friends on the ski lift.
If you really do it right you end up in a hot tub with freinds and beers at a cabin with no phones.

This is Giardi Delarenta’s. My notes are are to use fattier beef.

Ingredients

1/4 cup extra-virgin olive oil
1 medium onion, coarsely chopped
2 garlic cloves, peeled and coarsely chopped
1 celery stalk, coarsely chopped
1 carrot, coarsely chopped
1 pound ground chuck beef
One 28-ounce can crushed tomatoes
1/4 cup flat-leaf Italian parsley, chopped
8 fresh basil leaves, chopped
Salt and freshly ground black pepper
1/4 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano

Steps

In a large skillet heat the olive oil. When almost smoking, add the onion and garlic and saute over medium heat until the onions become very soft, about 8 minutes. Add the celery and carrot and saute for 5 minutes. Raise heat to high and add the ground beef. Saute, stirring frequently and breaking up any large lumps and cook until meat is no longer pink, about 10 minutes. Add the tomatoes, parsley and basil and cook over medium low heat until the sauce thickens. Season with salt and pepper. This will take approximately 1/2 hour. Finish bolognese with Pecorino Romano.

My boss’ boss who I like and respect bandied about a popular claim that China would suprass US GDP by 2030. This sounded lazily familiar so I tried to challenge him to a bet in the elevator but he demurred Still open to giving some one 2:1 odds that China will not surpass US GDP. Let me lay out an argument.

Reasons for china pesimism.

Population: a huge part of gdp is actually raw population. While the US has obviously not in a baby boom it at least allows some immigration offset. China’s seems to be trying to rollback the the one child policy but is not having much success. Sometime in the 2030-40’s chinas population should invert with more old to support than young to support them.
Catch up growth / historical precedent: Remember the 80’s Japan was going blow right past us? Go watch some 80’s movies/sci fi. Zaibatsu were unstoppable. Turned out Japan was doing alot of catch up growth and now they dominate some industries but not everything like it seemed at the time.
Rising costs: turns out a prosperous people start valueing thnings like a better environment, leisure time, and more consumption goods. Already real-estate prices skyrocketed and there’s a parallel to that in Japan.
State sponsered entities: Some people see this as a positive but I think overtime these enities will rot and it will be too hard policically to let them be replaced. So while Baidu, Tencent, Hauwei, Alibaba seem new and fresh now how will they do in 20 years.
The great firewall of china: Long term this makes china dumber and bottles up resentment.

Reasons for china optimism

Sci fi! Cixin Liu in particular. I was impressed by Three Body Problem but the short story anthology wandering earth. There is just so much optimism and confident in china’s ability to change the world. It is very remeniscent of 50/60’s scifi. In particular china sun is an everyman conquering the solar system that felt very american.
Can do attitude. Some of the infrastructure china is amazing. Part of this is disregard for individuals that goes hand in hand with a low red tape infra.
U.S. Trade policy is dumb and lets china get cement a lop of econimic allies (TPP failure for example)

Chicken Noodle Soup

From my mother:

You will need

carrots
Celery,
egg noodles (medium width),
bay leaves,
chicken breast
either chicken soup base or chicken bouillon. You can also use canned chicken stock.

Directions

Peal and chop up the 1 carrot and 1 stalk of celery.
Rinse chicken breast and trim off any fat.
Put about 3-4 cups of water in medium saucepan.
Add 2 chicken breasts, celery, carrots, 1 TBsp chicken base or 2-3 cubes of bouillon, 2 bay leaves, 1/2 tsp. of salt and 1/4 tsp of pepper. I also add the leaves from the inside of the celery.
Bring to boil over medium heat and boil until chicken and carrots are done. NB
Remove chicken, bay leaves and celery leaves.
Add about 2 handfuls of noodles to liquid.
Shred chicken and return to pot.
Cook until noodles are done. About 10 minutes.

If you use canned chicken stock you might want to cook the noodles separately since they absorb quite a bit of liquid.

4 ounces mayo or spiced mayo
6 ounces queso fresco
New Mexico red chile powder
Cilantro

Directions

Peel and shuck corn to remove husks. Using a wet paper towel, wipe and peel away any remaining strands.
Place corn on grill on high heat. Turn cobs every 2 minutes until browned and slightly blackened on all sides. Cut corn kernels off of cob.
Portion every 8 ounces of corn with 1 ounce mayo and 1 1/2 ounces queso fresco. Garnish with chile powder and cilantro. Enjoy!

Ramayana and women

Reading the Ramayana because I realized I had no historical or literary knowledge of India. There was some pretty myopic passages about women. Granted the translation is from the 1950’s, but I kinda want to reread an odessey/illiad/aeneid translation from the same time period and see if it’s as bad. Maybe Penelope and Circe are portrayed equally poorly.

But here are some of my higlights/lowlights

So follow up on the [Brewie Review]({{ site.baseurl }}{% post_url 2018-6-2-Brewie %}). Was having a blast. Just orded a double recipe from morebeer. But while my sculpin clone was mashing, the whole brewie died. Changing outlets didn’t help but unlike during ordering customer support was pretty helpful. Their first guess was a fuse so I grabbed a 15 amp ceramic microwave fuse (should be good for higher temps) at home depot and cracked open the case. (about 12 short screws and 4 feet have to be removed, not too bad)

date: 2018-06-02 So the brewie is probably my largest purchase for myself outside of a ford escape and my house both fo which were 7 years ago. Notes so far.

It took > 6 months to arrive, customer support was terrible.
Calibration. I could reallly use a better way to weight 10kg of water rather than 1 nalgene at a time.
Need a cart, kinda too heavy for my folding table but still want to move it to get at back and brewing location and storage location might be different.
They ship you a ready to go recipe which is great but interestingly they hide the exact mix of ingredients. You know the total grains and the hop timings but not the break down of grain/hop types/weights. A little homebrew/open source unfriendly. I know they’re tryingt to get you to buy more but harumph.
Want to hook up a filter in line with my hose. Actually have a water filter but not confident I can make a non leaky connection.
Looks like they put an irish moss tablet in with lat hop addition. Trying to think if there are other additions I should be making.
Seems like you can mash/sparge at multiple temps.
Originally suggested 6 hours. 5 hours seemed more correct + 15 minutes for cleanining. Automatic cooling is amazing.
Cleaning wasn’t great and left sediment in the machine. Haven’t tried detergent cycle just quick and sanatize. Hop containers in particular have a good amount of hard to reach sediment. Need to get a better brush.
Needs longer hoses had to jerry rig some drainage.
May need to adjust my recipes.
Alot of my equipment might get tossed. Even the brewing spoon. Time to put some ads on craigslist. (crosses fingers it doesn’t explode)

Benjamin was the first baby in our close friend group in seattle. Now they’re 4 more boys in our group and another one on the way. People used to have kids cause that’s what happened after sex or cause that’s just what everyone did. Now some friends are opting out of childern intentionally, but we’re chooing kids and I thought I should document why.

We believe we are good people and want there to be more good people. If you just have the folks with low impulse control have kids you end up with a worse future. The movie idiocracy doesn’t have to come true. If you take Simon’s view on the bet, then kids are not a burden but a resource and the smart ones are probably what will save us.
Children are the only real chance at immortality. They are not you but they are much of you both in genes and in outlook. Maybe some of me will goto mars someday and populate new worlds after the rest of us falls to dust.
Children bring an unrelatable joy. I can’t describe why seeing your kid laugh and smile is so great. You could say this is just stockholm syndrome but I don’t think that’s true.
Altruism is actually important. I have enjoyed my life. Giving life to someone else to live and putting in the work to make that happen is part of it’s own reward.

Lightning github / Raiden Remember when bitcoin was going to be a currency? That seems so 2012 now. Well maybe it actually can be you just only go to the block chain as settlment and do everything else through pre commited channels. I don’t think increasing the blocksize is anything real. Ligntining is getting to mainnet but Eaiden actually seems even futher along than I thought so need to check it out.
DNS replacement So you could argue that ICANN has actually done a fine job. Or you could say their arbitrary, rentseeking and subject to government pressure. Dns isn’t that big but seems like a template for some other areas.
Identity I think facebook/google are too ensconsed here but who knows maybe a hail mary works from time to time. A global identity seperate from government/companies has some real advantages.
Interbank settlement. This may not be on bitcoin or ethereum but it seems like it’s a giant mess today. So it seems like the big banks will just move to some distributed ledger to end around the government. Maybe some reneging on the block chain will be the next bear sterns.
Content Origination Doesn’t settle itself but might be convincing evidence if my hash appeared on the block chain before yours and our edit difference isn’t that big.

Zelda Breathe of the wild is pretty easily the best game I have ever played. It’s super open and has almost no rules. I ran around for the first hour without a shirt or pants. I saw a dragon fly into a mountain sunset. There’s an unlimited number of things to do (though maybe there’s not enough types of monsters to smite).

However I will probably stop playing video games for several years now. After shooting down giant pig gannon there’s just an emptiness. Where did the last two months go? What have I learned? What have I made? It is a solitary game so I have no better friendship. I’ve climbed no real mountains.

Besides the narcissm…

Facebook feels likes it is rotting. My friends don’t say interesting things there any more. Mostly that’s moved to whatsapp. There is alot of ranting that i’ve mostly blocked. What’s left is mostly baby pictures and my high school friend meeting meeting wierd al. Both of those are great but not what facebook used to be. I never felt like I was a twitter person. There are definitely nuggets of gold but there’s also a never ending river of distraction. I was always a google reader person and still one of those wierdos on feedly [(opml)]({{ “feedly.opml” | relURL }}). Medium is interesting but as long we’re going open I wanted to go really open.

Attempted to read this at my fathers funeral. I didn’t do a great job

My family’s not big on public speaking but after a one quiet funeral Dad asked me if I’d say something when he went. I hope this would make him smile.

My Father was the toughest man I ever knew. My father was also the most joyful. He ran 29 Boston marathons and had usually put in miles on his shoes before anyone was awake. But I remember a man that always encouraged me to skip with him down the side walk and whistle all the way. It never mattered who was watching.

Why we goto church

What follows is a letter from my Dad to PJ about why we goto church. What I like most about it is it’s modesty and ambivalence. I find it far more convicing than most clarion calls to faith.

PJ, sorry for not responding to the question on why we go to church two days in a row at Christmas…so I will try now.

first, when Christmas immediately precedes or follows a Sunday, the church says you need to meet both obligations…..first the Sunday and second the Christmas mass.
second, perhaps a broader question is why attend church at all…..when you are young like you are, you tend to be fearless and believe death is in the distant future, so you say “I don’t need to go”. As one ages, death and other bad things tend to be more of a reality, so when this occurs, one looks for someone or something that might help…and maybe the church is that answer. *. third, for me the Catholic Church provides a “process” for life……babies thru old folks. The process is not perfect, however, it makes more sense when you have children. There exists a set of “rules”, most of which make sense.
fourth, I had a model Catholic with my mother, who had converted from being a Lutheran…she used the process on her 4 boys, and it mostly worked
prayer…. altho you can pray anywhere, the church provides a special place. Prayer by the way is superstitious behavior……when you pray for something and it occurs - you say, praying worked; and when you pray for something and nothing happens, the church might say you didn’t pray enough. When you face death, or have a potential deadly disease, like cancer, you pray out of fear.

Lessons

Unittests can be bad if mocking balloons code size (also are you really testing your code or the mocks). Acceptance tests that are mostly setup are bad. Run end to end tests against a real environment.
Dependencies on services are great. Libraries good. Not invented here is anathema.
Config flags/flighting while normally great can baloon code size if not cleaned aggressively.
Yagni is importnant. Arictect Astronaughts not needed. Refactor to be general when you have > 2 users of code.
Beware the young competent developer who goes and creates a whole new system from scratch
microservices really need to have little boiler plate. This is part of the appeal of lambda/functions.
